Come, Holy Spirit, Come
Home » Original Songs » Updated HymnsDescription
This song is intended to be used as a congregational plea for the Holy Spirit to bring His divine light to three areas: our personal spiritual growth, our ministry to the poor and needy, and our evangelism and missions work. Too often songs calling for the Spirit’s presence and power stop at the first area, our personal affections and holiness. While that is certainly an important work of the Spirit, without which we would be left to our own cold-heartedness and indifference to spiritual things, the Spirit must also empower our outreach as well. Acts 1:8 says “you [disciples] will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” We see that the purpose of the Spirit’s power in this instance was given in order to send them out to the mission field and make their gospel labors effective. May the church today cry out for the Spirit’s presence and power to animate and enliven every aspect of her ministry!Lyrics | (Show Original Wordings) |
and let Your light arise;
Dispel the sorrow from our minds,
the darkness from our eyes.
Convince us of our sin,
then lead to Jesus’ blood,
And to our wand’ring view reveal
the secret love of God.
Chorus:
Come, Holy Spirit, come
and melt our frozen hearts;
Your powr alone can pour
fresh life on ev'ry part.
So come and make us whole
and sanctify our souls,
Come, Holy Spirit, come
and shine your light!
Enlarge our stingy hearts
and move us toward the poor,
Then may our gifts and deeds reveal
the source of mercy’s store;
And give them ears to hear
the message of the cross
For Jesus came to seek and save
the needy and the lost.
Come, to the nations bring
Your Christ-exalting rays
And turn our prayers to win their hearts
into their songs of praise;
Our plans, and hopes, and tears
to see the lost repent
Can never change one sinner’s heart
until Your light is sent.

[...] Hymn: Come, Holy Spirit, Come [...]
What does it mean in the 1st verse, "And to our wand’ring view reveal the secret love of God."?
In what sense is God's love a secret needing to be revealed?
Alex, I think the author is getting at the fact that without God's help, we can't see, understand, and appreciate the depth of the love God has for us. It's a prayer to fix our eyes on God's love, understand it, and help us to believe that it's true.
